The Salzburger Christkindlmarkt’s location is unbeatable. Set in two adjacent squares next to Salzbrug’s Cathedral the impressive 17th century building towers over the market. The location also comes with a few drawbacks. Chief among these is the large crowds of people (locals and tourists). Not always a bad thing but crowds can become a problem during busier days (weekend) and times. The tourists can also make for a bit less of a local atmosphere, but don’t complain because you’re one too.
There is a large variety of food and drink though it is pricier than at other Christmas Markets. Shopping is also good with standbys such as ornaments and Räuchermänner available in large varieties. There are also some less conventional stands selling items such as dog toys and the occasional Komodo Dragon statue.
Insider tip: At 18:00 all of Salzbrug’s church bells chime with a little extra gusto. A great time to be at the market.
