22 DECEMBER – London/Muhldorf
Arrive at the hotel, settle in and experience a warm greeting from your host before enjoying cocktails by a roaring fire. This is followed by a delicious welcome dinner of traditional Austrian fare.

23 DECEMBER – Passau
Enjoy an included trip to this mediaeval town where the rivers the Danube, Ilz and Inn converge and see the magnificent St Stephan’s cathedral, containing the world’s largest church organ. A sumptuous four-course dinner hosted by the owner awaits us back at the castle, including a wine tasting featuring some of Austria’s finest red and white wines.

CHRISTMAS EVE – Muhldorf
After a hearty breakfast join the guided walking tour exploring the fabulous landscape surrounding the castle. Alternatively, relax and maybe hire a bicycle or take a riding lesson on one of the horses from the castle stables. A delicious dinner accompanied by live music from a quartet begins the Christmas festivities this evening.

CHRISTMAS DAY – Muhldorf
The morning is free to unwind before brunch. Then take a romantic horsedrawn carriage ride to the rustic lakeside fisherman’s hut for spicy mulled wine and roasted chestnuts. Later we indulge in a wonderful four-course candlelit dinner with evocative piano music before embarking on an atmospheric torch-lit walk through the castle grounds to conclude a very special Christmas Day.

BOXING DAY – The Danube Valley & Melk Abbey
The day starts with an included trip to Melk in the glorious Danube Valley, dotted with ancient castles and historic villages. We tour the Abbey, one of Europe’s most important Baroque buildings standing dramatically above the flowing river, and then return to the castle for a traditional farmers’ buffet of local specialities.

27 DECEMBER – Linz
Today we make an optional trip to Linz for a fascinating guided tour of the Old Town. Later tonight we are treated to a delicious farewell dinner at the castle.

28 DECEMBER – Muhldorf/London
We leave after breakfast for the journey home.

20 DECEMBER UK/Tel Aviv
We fly to Israel and transfer to our hotel in Galilee for a three-night stay.

21 DECEMBER Capernaum & Banias Springs
Today we take a boat ride across the Sea of Galilee to the ancient ruined city of Capernaum, where we find the remains of a 2nd century synagogue. From here we travel to Tagbha, the site of the miracle of loaves and fishes, where we visit the Church of Multiplication to view the 4th century mosaic floor. We continue to the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, to the Mount of Beatitudes, where Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount, and then drive north through the Hulah Valley to Banias Springs, the site of the ancient city of Caesarea Phillipi. We return to our hotel via the Golan Heights.

22 DECEMBER Nazareth, Acre & Safed
Our excursion today takes us to Nazareth, where we pay visits to the Church of the Annunciation, St Joseph’s Workshop and Mary’s Well. From Nazareth we head west to the city of Acre, fought over for centuries during the Crusades, and captured by Richard the Lionheart at one time. In Acre we enjoy a short sightseeing tour, taking in the fortress and the old harbour area, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before we head off to Safed, the centre of Jewish mysticism and our last port of call for the day.

23 DECEMBER Haifa, Caesarea, Tel Aviv & Jaffa
We take a short walking tour this morning around the Kibbutz, before our drive to Haifa, where we see the Bahai Shrine and Persian gardens. We then proceed down the coastal plain to Caesarea, the Roman capital of Judea, stopping for a tour of the excavations of the ancient city, the Roman theatre and the aqueduct. Our day ends with the drive to Tel Aviv and the ancient port of Jaffa, before we head to our hotel in Jerusalem, where we stay for four nights.

CHRISTMAS EVE Jerusalem
Today we enjoy a walking tour of the Old City of Jerusalem, entering through the Jaffa Gate and the Jewish Quarter and heading along Cardo Maximus, the 2,000 year old restored Roman street, to the Western Wall. There is time to view the Temple Mount area, before we follow the Stations of the Cross along Via Dolorosa to the Holy Sepulchre. Then it’s through the bazaars to Mount Zion, the Tomb of King David and the Room of the Last Supper.

CHRISTMAS DAY Bethlehem
Spend a relaxing day in Bethlehem where we enjoy a traditional Christmas lunch followed by a visit to the Church of the Nativity and Shepherds Fields. This evening we will enjoy a special oriental dinner, including wine, at a local restaurant.

BOXING DAY Dead Sea & Massada
Today we take a drive past the Qumran Caves, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, en route to the Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth. We stop for a swim (or float!) at Ein Gedi before heading to Massada, the site of an ancient fortress on a cliff-top plateau, and the last stronghold of the Jews after the destruction of the Second Temple in AD 70. We ascend Massada by cable car and visit the food store rooms, water irrigation system and Herod’s Palace, where a band of Jewish rebels held out against a Roman siege for three years.

27 DECEMBER Tel Aviv/UK
Return to Tel Aviv airport for your flight home.

If you would like to be in Trier itself, you may prefer to stay on a bed and breakfast basis at the three star Hotel Römerbrücke on the banks of the River Moselle, just a five minute walk from the old town. The hotel has a restaurant and bar and all bedrooms feature private facilities, TV, radio and telephone. There is a supplement of £70 per person for this holiday. (Available on all dates)

You will stay in friendly family-run hotels and Gasthofs in villages in the Moselle Valley region. Hotels have a bar, restaurant and bedrooms are comfortably furnished with private facilities.

Itinerary
DAY 1
Local departure and a mid-morning crossing to Calais. Evening arrival at your hotel for a three night stay.

DAYS 2 & 3
Free to relax and enjoy our excursion programme.

THE FOLLOWING EXCURSION IS INCLUDED:
Trier – Formerly a Roman settlement on the Moselle, Germany’s oldest town has a superb Christmas market in the pedestrianised centre, overlooked by the impressive Cathedral and the Roman tower known as the Porta Nigra. There is also an excellent selection of shops, bars and restaurants.

THE FOLLOWING EXCURSIONS ARE OPTIONAL:
Moselle Valley – A leisurely three-quarter day excursion visiting the popular town of Cochem, with a wine tasting.
Moselle River Cruise – Enjoy a leisurely boat trip along the peaceful Moselle River.

DAY 4
Depart after breakfast for a late afternoon crossing back to the UK and continue to your original departure point in the evening.
